We like to feature influential members of the cycling community that demonstrate the opportunities that cycling can bring about to improve the world, the environment, your community, and your health. We at Montague Bikes think it’s important to show proper recognition to these members of our community and give them the respect they deserve. We’re hoping to do our part in spreading their stories to a greater audience and hopefully inspiring others to do the same.
This post is in regards to a very special young woman whose blog I had to opportunity to read. Her name is Kate Trenerry, and is a junior History and Cinema & Media Studies double major at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Kate recently received the Edward H. “Ted” Mullin ’06 Memorial Fellowship Prize through the History department at Carleton and, through that, has found a unique and incredible opportunity. She will bike a section of the Iron Curtain Trail, from Travemünde, Germany to the Danube River and merge her studies of History and Media Studies to gain a better understanding of this crucial piece of history.
The Iron Curtain Trail runs along the line that separated the former Soviet Union and Western Europe. The section she will be traveling is about 1,600 miles long. She will be visiting the majority of museums, monuments, marker towers, and historical checkpoints that existed 40 years ago. She will be documenting her ride and will be taking photographs and talking to people along the way to gain more information and delve further into the history of the Cold War.

Kate ordered the 2010 Montague Paratrooper-a full size folding mountain bike the is built for sturdy and reliable performance and the portability of a folding bike-to use on her 1,600 mile ride, and has been Tweeting about it ever since!
