This is WAY too cool not to share. Mark, one Montague rider who knows how to customize a bike, sent us an e-mail with a picture of his Montague Boston single speed that he customized on his own (since our bikes have industry standard components, this is simple and convenient!) and made it look, for lack of a better word, awesome.
Mark used a mix of new and used components for this modification. He did the work himself and called it a “fun little project.” Yes, it certainly looks like it!
Here’s a list of Mark’s modifications:
- White Velocity Deep V wheels
- Black/White Vittoria Rubino Pro tires
- White Eighth Inch 46t Crank (and Sugino bottom bracket)
- ACS Claws 19t freewheel
- Black/White KMC chain
- Forte carbon fiber bottle cage
- Wet White Ritchey WCS seatpost and stem
- Black Aliante Gamma saddle
- Profile Design Cobra Wing carbon fiber handle bar (w/ brake levers)
- Black Shimano Dual Platform A530 pedals

By the way, can the quick-release be replaced with a bolt-on skewer?

You guys need to sell the frames by themselves! No really! cheaper shipping, HUGE worldwide fixie scene you can tap into.

I wonder what are the brake reach measurements for the front and the rear caliper brakes? Maybe the tech team from Montague can help?

The stock brakes calipers on the Boston have a reach of 47-57mm (adjustable pad position).
Had long wanted to do this just by buying the frame, but alas no frame sales.
After 2.5yrs riding my Montague into the ground everyday (Schwalbe marathon plys tyres just don’t puncture as easily) , I felt inspired by the above and did a version of the above in red, which looks bad-ass awesome.
3 warnings, when tricking out the bike, the weight of the new rims/tyres/hub can’t be underestimated. For me it added about almost a kilo (probably shouldn’t have gone from extra deep v rims). Although I’ve got slicker wheels and a skinnier tyre-print, it certainly slowed the machine down (or I’m just not pedalling as hard, bc I’m trying to get the ladies numbers as they’re looking at me like the fool that I am).
When replacing the crank, you should see if you can get one with a guard similar to the one on the original b/c on fold-up, you’re likely to just mash the chain. (Also check the size of the crank, you don’t want it not to fit on the frame.
The quick release on the front wheel, while I’m always one to carry with me a spanner for the rear wheel anyhow, you’ll certainly miss the quick release if you’re trying to pack it/unfold it up in a hurry.
