Ever since 1956, the League of American Bicyclists has designated May as National Bike Month.

This means that, throughout the month of May, you should be keeping an eye out for special bike-themed events in your area – rides, maintenance and safety classes, film festivals, you name it.

And, of course, there are a few notable events:

May 9: Bike to School Day (check for events at your local school)

May 14-18: Bike to Work Week (a great way to start bike commuting)

May 18: Bike to Work Day (if you’re not up for the whole week – at least give it a shot on Friday).

National Bike Month is also a great opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling and the need (in many places) for better infrastructure.

For more information about National Bike Month events in your area, you can check here on the League’s website.

Are you planning anything for Bike Month? Or planning to ride on Bike to Work Day? Are you a regular bike commuter looking to encourage more bike commuting in your area? For readers outside the U.S. – do you have anything like this where you live?
