In the town next door to Montague HQ there is a vibrant bicycle group, the Somerville Bicycle Committee. Each year for the past 20 years they have hosted the Tour de Somerville, this year’s theme was the “Edge of the City Tour” which was just that – a group bicycle ride around the city limits of Somerville, MA with stops to explain and explore the lesser-known corners and history of this town. The weather was great; it’s always wonderful to ride with cyclists who may be your neighbors and friends-you-just-haven’t-met-yet, and so off we went.
The ride began in Davis Square, just down the street from Tufts University, and proceeded along the southern border of Somerville, continued up through the Inner Belt, and over to the Mystic River. A great many of us were surprised to find bike paths where we did not know any existed previously. A delicious rest by the boathouse, catered by Redbones.
We continued along the northern boundary by the Mystic River to the Tufts Campus. A brief pause on the top of the Tisch Library gave splendid scenic views.

We continued along the short Arlington border, home to some new cycling infrastructure. One feature of this ride that I came to appreciate very much was the police escort. There was one officer from the cycling unit who did the entire route with us, as well as a vehicle escort. These officers directed traffic while the bicycle fleet went through intersections. This helped to keep everyone together and safe – cars and cyclists alike. It also shows great community support of cycling.
From the library we continued back to the start. A lovely time was had by all. Many thanks to the organizers, police department, and all who came by to ride!
We met new friends and old friends. Enjoyed the sun and the cycling and sun. A great fall ride.
