This polished, folding electric bike comes pretty darn close to perfection.
This folding bike with a step-through frame is the most comfortable folding ebike I’ve ridden. It’s hard not to feel impressed when you hop on the M-E1’s saddle. There’s no part of it that feels rickety, unlike some other folding bikes I’ve tested.
Overall, the ride quality and build quality are excellent, making it easily one of the most comfortable folding bikes we’ve yet ridden.
The power kicks in gently and predictably, and there’s plenty of it to get you rolling. The M-E1 flattened every hill we threw at it with aplomb.
The Montague M-E1 is a game-changer for city commuters and those with limited storage space. Its folding design, powerful performance, impressive range, and lightweight build make it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a reliable and convenient electric bike.
The folding e-bike offers the same ride quality as a non-folding e-bike, but with the added benefits of easier storage.
A full sized folding electric bike with premium parts all around. The Shimano STePS E6100 drive unit is an efficient, quiet, lightweight, and narrow to keep the bike compact when folded.
Industry-leading folding design allows the bike to become very compact and stay folded without rattling or coming undone.
Most folding ebikes aren’t as comfortable as this one!
When it comes to urban mobility, portability, and space-saving solutions are essential.
This is where bikes like Montague’s new M-E1 come into play. By making use of standard bicycle geometry, as well as conventional 700c wheels, it provides riders with ergonomic efficiency. Meanwhile, the Montague M-E1 also incorporates a folding frame so users don’t miss out on the space-saving capabilities of the good old folding bike—and oh yeah, it’s electric, too!
PORTABILITY
When folded, the M-E1 can be effortlessly rolled for easy transport. Roll it into the elevator, up to the office, or into your apartment. Take it in the train, bus, or car trunk for a multi-modal commute.
SECURITY
Traditional e-bikes are not ideal for the city, where riders don’t want to lock their valuable investment on the street and space is limited indoors. The M-E1 can be stored safely and securely in a closet.
PERFORMANCE
The M-E1 does not sacrifice ride quality to offer the most convenient e-bike on the market. Full size 700c wheels and industry standard components deliver the high performance riders demand.

Stephen Ford –
I’ve been a Montague fan for many years. I had an MX that I rode for 10 years. Great bikes. This is my first ebike. I absolutely love it. The ride is so smooth. It basically amplifies the force that I push on the pedals with – and it is so quick! I switched out the seat to a more comfortable one, but otherwise everything else has been perfect. I would definitely recommend it.
f1000biker –
Hey Montague – thanks to you guys for making this great bike. I’ve been riding it everywhere for the last few weeks, and it is incredible. YOur support staff – I’ve spoke with Jonathan and Liza, are great – and helped me understand a few things with the motor system. Keep it up!
Sean –
Not much to say — this bike does it all! fast, comfortable, and can fold. happy with it. five stars!
Van Lifer Jules –
Got the me-1 to go in our converted Ford Transit. I wanted an ebike in order to ride the the areas we visit but could absolutely not leave it out on a bike rack. We end up parking in some pretty random locations when traveling and it would not be safe out there. Space is super limited in the van so a folder was the only option. This one fits well enough toward the back without getting in the way of our sleeping quarters or kitchenette. The pedal assist not jerky at all like I’ve felt on cheaper e-bikes, so you get used to it and sort of forget you’re getting the assist sometimes. It’s just feels like effortless normal bike riding. Even up some pretty steep hills it’s been great. 5/5

I’ve been reading about these bikes for a while, and was planning on getting one of the regular Montagues. Then I heard about the new electric bike, and it definitely sounded perfect for me. I’m 65 years old, and my legs aren’t quite up to riding long distances any more. So I got the new electric one, and it is a real hoot. If you’ve never ridden an electric bie, it is so nice. I haven’t ridden a lot of them, but this is really a game changer for me. Went almost 20 miles yesterday, and I am not a strong rider by any means. Great bike!

So far so good! My first electric bike, and very much worth it so far. The ability to fold it up and wheel it around is what finally made me pull the trigger on an ebike. I bring it into work every day, wheel it right into the building and on the elevator. Find myself wanting to ride to lunch or around town on weekends too, which I never did with a normal bike. Loving my ME1!
BillWill –
SO glad invested in this over a cheaper-made e-bike. super easy to fold. goes faster than i’d ever need. very stable, and fun to ride. already recommended to several friends and coworkers

Got this bike to get out of the house during the pandemic. Was expecting more exercise – this bike makes you feel like you’re barely pushing at all but still an absolute blast to ride, been getting out of the house and exploring so much more since I got it. Helps that I’m able to fold it up & stow it away at home too. A real game changer!
BevBev99 –
I bought this bike for my husband for Christmas. Unfortunately it was late in arriving at our bike shop, so I couldn’t put it under the tree. But it arrived (finally) last week, and he really loves it. Now wer’e thinking I should get one too (I’m going to need to dip into our piggy bank!) so I can keep up with him. A very nice experience all around.
Miles J –
Awesome bike! I’ve bought several Montagues before and this one folds in a totally new way. Used to the old way but was able to get the hang of this in minutes and it’s even more convenient. I’ve been riding it into work every day and keeping it right under my desk. Range is good too. Was a bit worried because it’s heavier than any bike I’ve owned before, but the electric boost is powerful enough to make the bike feel super light when riding. Overall definitely a worthwhile purchase, has really changed my morning commute for the better. Thanks!
Emmitt –
Only been riding my ME1 for about 3 weeks but I’m impressed so far. Other folding e-bikes I looked at were cheap straight from China with no name motors and mostly small wheels. Getting one from a trusted brand and having a Shimano system is by far worth the higher price tag in my book. I had some questions on settings with the STEPS motor and was able to get a quick response from Shimano customer support. That bodes well for any support in the future.
Very smooth riding and it fits in the back of my VW without issue. I haven’t had a chance to fully test the range but I haven’t noticed it go below 50% battery even after riding 20+ miles (I usually charge after every ride). Shimano claims something like 70 miles on a charge for this system which I’m sure is “best case scenario” but it seems plausible given my experience. For anyone looking to add panniers, I’m using the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic, which uses their QL2.1 mounting system. It works great with the built rack on this bike. And I have to mention that the lights are super bright! I will update with another review after I’ve had the bike longer.
Thrasher07 –
Great bike. I’d highly recommend it. Got mine yesterday, and the quality of the build is really impressive. Nice fit and finish to it all . I like the internal cable routing – so they fold right with the frame. Fits in my Toyota Camry trunk. Charging is easy. The Shimano motor is quiet, and does a nice job going up hills. If you’re thinking about this bike, check out the video I saw on EBR: https://electricbikereview.com/montague/m-e1/ .. I saw that video and was sold
KenG65 –
Liking the ride. One thing I was skeptical about is the folding hinge, since it’s different from the design on Montague’s other bikes, but I don’t feel any flex even if I stand and really try to torque on it side to side. The low step frame is appreciated on a bike like this too. It’s definitely made with comfort in mind – handlebars are high enough that you’re sitting up, it’s easy to get on and off, the shocks help with bumps. The low step makes it work for me and my wife who has used it a few times even though she’s shorter than me. Happy with the purchase.

I’ve been a Montague rider for years (as one of my many bikes). I have several bikes from different brands (custom built road bike, Specialized full suspension, a steel CX bike, etc) but for folding they seem to have the best frame design and can offer something that actually rides like the bikes I’m used to. I got an early Paratrooper model back in 2005, later upgraded to a Navigator when they came out with the new bikes around 2015/2016, and now that they have a folding e-bike I had to nab one. It’s a pretty nifty design. Unlike their other bikes the front wheel stays on during folding so it’s VERY easy to fold. Shimano is Shimano so no surprise that they built an e-bike system that performs well. It might be a bit underpowered for some people (I have a friend with a 1000 watt ebike with a throttle), but if you want something that will still give you the experience of riding a bike but provides some nice assistance, a 250w mid-drive is enough. It feels like I’m a stronger cyclist than I am, but I don’t lose the feeling of BEING a cyclist.

Found this bike on an e-bike review website, never had an e-bike before but after doing some research this one seemed to be the best all around. Got it about a week ago and REALLY loving it! Way more comfortable than I was expected, very fast as well and really easy to ride (and to fold). Don’t fold it every day since I ride the full distance to work here in Austin but when I want to take it somewhere (on a road trip/future vacations in the car) it’s easy to fold. Pretty amazing that you can just take it anywhere like that. Love this bike! Looking forward to getting one for my son as well.
Rob, Ashburn Bicycle Repair –
Everything works perfectly. This bike rides incredibly well and that STEPs system (in my opinion) is the most intuitive/responsive/quiet of the other eBikes I sell/service by Bosch, Bafang, and a number of other proprietary systems.
I was surprised on how solid the M-E1 felt, it felt more solid than several non-folding eBikes I’ve ridden. Terrific bike!

I made the purchase for my father and it was totally worth it and the customer service has been so helpful. My father is a whole new man on this bike he really enjoys his rides and goes really far and zips around like he was 20 years younger.
Robert452 –
Finally got my replacement bike. The first one my bike shop showed me looked like it had been run over by a truck. The bike is awesome, but I can’t give them a 5 star because it took FOREVER to get one.
Ivan –
For some context: this is my first E-Bike, I’ve put a little over 700 miles on it as I write this and I was a novice bike commuter/cyclist when I hopped on this bike the first time.
I use this bike mainly for my commute that’s 26 miles round trip. The motor itself is amazing, it’s powerful and doesn’t feel janky when you’re stopping and starting. It also makes you feel like you’re pedaling and putting in the effort on the bike which was important to me. Hills just melt away, stopping for red lights is no longer a pain of having to accelerate again and it really helps keep you motivated on longer commutes. I’ve biked with rain, ice and in the cold and have had no issues at all with any conditions. The tires are extremely high quality, I bike mostly in the pothole ridden hell that is NYC and North Jersey and I’ve had no flats whatsoever even after riding over some glass and large rocks. Overall the bike is built well and can take punishing potholes without the folding mechanisms ever feeling loose and everything about the bike lends itself to a great riding experience. The battery tends to last me the whole 26 miles on high with just a little bit of charge (like 1-2 miles left) left but my commute has fairly ridiculous elevation changes, lots of stops and starts, and just lots of things that would wreck an ebike’s battery so other folks may get luckier with it than I have.
This bike has also made me fall in love with cycling and given me the confidence to ride on roads and now I own a gravel bike (n+1) :).
I do have a few minor nitpicks:
1. The rear light doesn’t appear to have been glued on with the strongest adhesive in the world and it hangs pretty far outside the frame. At one point I bumped it on my door frame and it came slightly loose and thought nothing of it. At some point in my next couple of commutes it appears to have bumped itself off with all the potholes. (I really do need to figure out a replacement…). In a possible next version of this bike I think the light should be flush with the frame so possible bumps on the side won’t spell the end of the rear light.
2. The handlebar folding mechanism did come loose for me once or twice. This isn’t a huge deal as the fix is actually really easy (there’s a small metal bolt you can turn to tighten it!) but the manual doesn’t have that information well documented. It just says go to your LBS which is fine but my LBS (and most) will not have exact experience working on this bike’s mechanisms so they know just as much as me. I think having a blurb in the manual about tightening the mechanism would be amazing or even a YouTube video! I’ve found that it needs to be tense enough to hold itself tight over big bumps but not tense enough that you can’t push it in.
3. This really is just a quibble but the stock seat is fairly uncomfortable. I thought I’d get used to it as getting a cushioned bike seat can also lead to problems but after I got another bike with another stock seat and this one is actually just really uncomfortable for very long distances. It really isn’t bad unless you’re doing a serious amount of time on the bike. Shorter errands I’ve done have been fine but by the end of my commute I’m definitely feeling the lack of comfort.
Even after all these nitpicks I think this bike is a 5/5, the high quality components for the motor/drivetrain/brakes/tires and the quality of the bike’s build really makes you feel capable of taking on longer rides.
Mike –
First EBike Ive tried and big fan of how it rides. Me and my wife have both used it and thinking about getting a second one.
James B –
Made the switch from the Navigator to the ME1 to make my ride to work easier and so far so good. The pedal assist makes hills a piece of cake to get up but still feels like you are doing some of the work like a nonelectric bike. Even though the folding mechanism is different from the Navigator it takes up basically the same amount of space which is great. Love everything about this bike.
Diane Hamilton –
Easy to get on and easy to use. Only complaint so far is the display could be bigger to make it easier to read. Big fan of the look since most folding bikes, especially folding ebikes have the small wheels and the M-E1 definitely feels more sturdy. Recharges pretty fast in about 3 hours and don’t have to do it after every ride. Satisfied with the purchase.
jt6524 –
The folding really makes this ebike special since I don’t have to worry about leaving it outside like a normal bike. I can bring it right inside and store it during the winter or in bad weather without taking up half a room. Easily fits in the closet. The motor is more powerful than I was expecting but also surprisingly quiet. The front light moves around a bit while riding over uneven ground but have tested multiple other ebikes and this one is by far the most practical. 5/5
Arthur M. –
Just got the ME1 a few days ago and love it so far. The folding system is super easy to use and is very helpful when I’ve brought it on the subway. Definitely heavier than a normal bike but its not noticeable while riding. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking about commuting to work.

I haven’t purchased one yet, but have been looking for one and this is exactly what I wanted. Can you tell me do you do financing?
