For our post today, we wanted to take a cue from the ever popular #ThrowbackThursday with a look at some vintage photos from Montague’s storied history.
Father and son Harry and David Montague launch Montague Corporation in 1987.
Harry Montague rides a Bi-Frame, our first folding frame design, while carrying a second folded bike.
Harry Montague explains the Bi-Frame folding bike design to TV reporters.
Dave Montague with the M-1000 Bi-frame. Photo taken along the Charles river in Cambridge, MA where Dave studied at MIT. Cambridge is still the home of Montague Headquarters.
Montague launched it’s first automotive program in 1992, partnering with BMW.
With BMW, Montague makes first ever Olympic Games Mountain Bike. As the official mountain bike of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, this bike was featured prominently in the closing ceremony.
Now lighter, stronger, and easier to fold than ever, Montague bikes have certainly come a long way from their early designs. We’re never done innovating, so keep any eye out for the next chapter in Montague’s history.
To whom it may concern, I have a Montague Corporation BMW 4,448,437 bicycle, what if any information can you share with me concerning bicycle?
Hi Lawrence. In the 1990s we were the official bike partner of BMW and produced BMW brand bikes that used our Bi-Frame folding design. At the time, they were included in the trunk of select car models. The Montague BMW folding bike was also the official mountain bike of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. You can find an owner’s manual for our older models at https://www.montaguebikes.com/online-owners-manual/ (at the bottom of the page).

can you give me more info on this slightly used bike,
model?
year?
Value?
Original cost?
Thank you
It appears to be an original Montague Crosstown. This uses our Bi-Frame design so it would be from the mid-1990s. We don’t deal in the second hand market at all so I’m afraid I can’t be helpful with value. It does look to be in great condition though!
A fantastic versatile design and I still use my 89 model Rudge Whitworth Bi-frame daily. Now converted from 26” to 700c and with “True Temper” Cromo frame tubes it will probably outlast me.
Thanks Montague, it’s an amazing bike.

Do you have information on the paint that was used on the mid 90s Montague / BMW biframes? Specifically were the colours (I’ve seen purple and yellow) matched with the BMW car colors at the time (e.g. Dakar Yellow / Daytona Violet)?
I know there was significant back and forth with BMW at that time regarding paint matching, so I believe the colors would indeed have been matched to the car paint colors of the era.
Does anyone know what Material the 1996_2000 BiFrame BMW bikes where made with?
The bi-frame models were all 4130 steel, or “chromoly”.
