With every great idea comes imitators. Some say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but if you’re looking for a high quality folding bike, only a genuine Montague will do. Unfortunately, there are some counterfeit Montague bikes on the market today; bikes that use our patented designs but are not made with our strict adherence to quality standards, safety, and manufacturing tolerances. A counterfeit Montague likely comes from an unknown factory with no customer support to back you up, and no warranty to speak of.
Take a look at the following differences between a genuine Montague Bike and a copy:
Names
Any bike using our design but not the official Montague name is a copy. We’ve seen everything from “Montbike” to “Ranger” to “MontaQUE” and “HAMMER” appear on frames using our design. Be sure the bike you’re looking at uses the Montague logo and has a model name that matches our current bike line. While our paint colors sometime vary in different markets, our model names remain the same. You can find the current models at www.montaguebikes.com/folding-bike
IMPORTANT: Any new bike using the Hummer brand name is a copy. Montague did work with General Motors to produce Hummer branded bikes between 2002 and 2007. Since that time Montague has produced NO Hummer branded bicycles.
HUMMER = FAKE
RANGER = FAKE
MONTBIKE = FAKE
Rear Dropout Shape
The rear dropouts on counterfeits are usually noticeably different than the ones used on a genuine Montague. They may not all look like the counterfeit below, but any deviation from the genuine dropout shown indicates a fake. NOTE: The Montague Boston and Boston 8 do have different dropouts to accommodate the single speed and internal gear hub setups.
Top Tube Size
All Montague mountain bikes use a top tube that is the same width and height (they do vary in length depending on frame size), while many counterfeit frames use a different size top tube. Most are noticeably smaller, but we have seen taller flatter tubes used on counterfeits.
Frame Quick Release
The frame quick release is an integral part of our folding system. The QR is designed for use in our bikes with a specialized end nut which slides into what we call the QR box under the top tube, and clamps the frame. Many counterfeit bikes do not utilize an end nut like this and use a much cheaper quick release.
The lever on one of these quick releases is also different:
Threaded Seat Tube Update
In 2012, Montague made a change to the design of the seat tube cluster. To allow folding, two concentric seat tubes are used. Before 2012, threaded lock nuts were used to secure the frames together. The new system changed these lock nuts to a threadless system. The tube is no longer threaded and a clamp is used instead. Any new bikes using a threaded locknut system are counterfeit.
Mag Wheels
We’ve seen several counterfeit Montague bikes with a lot of strange parts on them. One common example is plastic “mag” wheels. Montague has never sold a bike with this style of wheels. A bike available with mag wheels is most definitely a copy.
Decals
A genuine Montague bike will always have a US Patent sticker on the seat tube of the frame, just above the front derailleur. If this is missing, appears different from the image below, or does not display patent #5,975,551 it is likely a counterfeit.
The “Montague Military Technology” decal found on our Paratrooper and Paratrooper Pro is often imitated incorrectly. On the fake below, notice the different font, and the word “Montbike” substituted for Montague.
Source
Every MONTAGUE, HUMMER and PARATROOPER branded bike for sale on the Alibaba.com website is fake.
The website “paratrooper-bicycle.com” steals all official Montague photos, but the entire site sells counterfeits. The bicycles displayed in the images are real Montagues, but the products they ship are cheap copies/counterfeits.
In short, all bikes shown on these websites are fake counterfeits:
alibaba.com
aliexpress.com
hummer-bicycle.com
paratrooper-bicycle.com
dhgate.com

cnyccy.en.made-in-china.com

In addition, all offical Montague accessories are shown on the www.montaguebikes.com website. All other accessories are counterfeit and likely low quality.
Note
These are by no means the only differences between a genuine Montague folding bike and a counterfeit, but this post can be used as a guide to identifying fakes. Behind our production models are years of research, development, and product testing. With a counterfeit comes none of these. If you ever have a question or need help determining if the bike you plan to buy is genuine, feel free to contact us. We have a team of customer support specialists at Montague USA to help with any questions.
I’ve recently seen a paratrooper bike @ a online bike shop

Visiting your website. I’m from the Philippines. Do you have a legitimate
Dealer in our country?
Hello Jan,
We’re working on setting up distribution in the Philippines but there’s no one holding a stock of bikes there now. We do have distributors in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. If you want to order a bike, I would recommend going through Vans Urban Bicycle Co in Malaysia. You can find them at http://vansurbanbicycle.com/
hi may i know who r the distributors in singapore. any websites? thanks!
Vans Urban Bicycle Co acts as our distributor for both Malaysia and Singapore: https://www.montaguebikes.com/sg.html
Please contact them to order directly or find retailers in Singapore.
Is there any Hammer Bike that produced in Japan? pls reply me.
Montague no longer produces a Hummer bike, so this post is only related to Hummer branded bikes that are copying the Montague design. We don’t have any information regarding other bikes that use Hummer branding.

I am going to look at a “hummer 24.24″ Is that a model ever made by montague? I can not find much information about it on line. It it’s the only 24 speed 24” bike I’ve come across.
Hi Robbie. We’ve never made bikes with 24″ wheels. We stopped making Hummer branded bikes in 2008, so any new Hummer models are not ours.
How can we get the original HUMMER? Please guide. I am in China until 2019.
Our Hummer bike has not been in production since 2008. New genuine Montague Hummer models are no longer available.
I have one just picked it up have just clean it up it’s for sale
Hi there,
is there any legit distributers in United Arab Emirates?
Unfortunately, we do not have a distributor in the UAE right now. However, we are talking with some potential partners there. Hopefully they will be bringing in some bikes in 2016. To get a genuine Montague bike there now, you might be able to order from one of our European distributors: http://www.montaguebikes.com/global-bike-distributors/
Can I know the place to buy this bicycle in Sri Lanka?
Thank You.
We don’t currently have an official distributor in Sri Lanka, but one of our other distributors in Southeast Asia may be able to ship to you. I would contact Van’s Urban Bicycle Co in Malaysia: http://www.montaguebikes.com/my.html
I have a X MONTAGUE MILITARY TECHNOLOGY, GM HUMMER (trademark) model, black, has the correct patent number on the sticker of the down tube plus an additional trademark statement by General Motors on the same sticker (MONTAGUE USA PATENT #5,975,155 AND FOREIGN COUNTER PARTS HUMMER IS A GENERAL MOTOR LICENSED TRADEMARK USED UNDER LICENSE TO MONTAGUE CORPORATION); and an additional sticker underneath as GM OFFICIAL LICENSED PRODUCT C22161 (plus additional printing too small for me to read with my vision). Everything appears to be in the correct areas and proper font. Printing on both sides of the seat stay (rear down tubes) show “PATENTED FOLDING SYSTEM”; additionally, right side also shows “www.militarybikes.com” on the portion of the tube.
Bike has ALEXRIMS DM18 with FORMULA hubs, SHIMANO DEORE LX rear derailleur, SHIMANO Alivio front derailleur, ROMAX tracer crank arms and tracer F.I.S chain wheels, TANGE handlebar stem and adjustable riser (US patent, Mfg. by TANGE for CANE CREEK [trademark]), BONTRAGER SSR handlebar grips, HUMMER (trademark) SYS shocks, SHIMANO V-BRAKE C-I DECK PLUS shifters (24-speed, 3×8), VELLO seat patent pending with MONTAGUE printed on both sides of the nose of the seat, PROMAX front disk bake and folding pedals with a warning statement, “Be careful of pinched fingers.”
Any way to identify the year of this model? Thank you.
It does sound like one of our genuine Hummer bikes which were made between 2002 and 2007. We may be able to determine more specifically the year of manufacture if you email us the serial number to info@montaguebikes.com
Despite the fact that these other companies copy your design patent, they are in fact versatile enough to offer many options in builds, for example,at least Montbike and Hummer both road, mountain bike and FATBIKE versions of that said frame. If you are going to pay attention to these racing and conservative commuter types, then WHY NOT offer a FATBIKE version? Why the big wait?Is it because the current demographic doesn’t require that version? No money in it for you guys?I have a Paratrooper, and I love it-but I want to do extreme riding with it,beach sand or heavy snow, and I want a FATBIKE version of the Paratrooper,Id gladly pay the money to obtain one. These are rugged bikes,so why not build on that premis and make them even MORE rugged?I don’t understand why half the world has to want something like this before it gets approval for manufacturing. Can you tell me if there is even a REMOTE chance of your company considering this option?I would be riding this thing constantly if it was built, its just more of an aggressive ride than the current model and far more versatile for the serious cyclist.I wish that you could realize this..
I also have a very similar model as described above, I purchased in2014 at a goodwill for 65.00 and am curious how much it was originally and if you have any idea what the resale value is currently?
Hi. Is this fake??
http://bicycles.sg/shop/foldable-hummer-road-bicycle/
It’s not a Montague. It doesn’t even use our folding system. I highly doubt it’s officially licensed by Hummer/GM either.

i found a mate green Paratrooper PRO is fake?, do you only make en mate black?
Tks
There is in Sand Color too, could you confirm if it is fake?
Tks
Hi Drako. Our Taiwanese distributor has done a few special order frames from us, which are the USMC versions you see on those links. They are genuine. A few distributors have also ordered Sand Paratrooper Pros from us. I’m sure there are some fake ones out there as well, but there are genuine sand bikes.
Are these real or fake: http://www.yark.com.tw/yark_bike/
They are real. Yark is our official distributor in Taiwan and China.
Are these bikes real?
The bikes pictured in the link you provided are genuine. I believe that is an alternate website for one of our online retailers that sells survival gear, Safecastle LLC.
Hi, I am looking at a Hummer Montague bike bought in Alaska 2005/ 2007 approx. S/N. MT40300857.
1. Noticed Rear Dropouts had 2 small holes but did not have the 2 tear drop type cutout holes .
2.The “QR” on the frame didn’t have the large “Lobe” but was the same size as the wheel “QR”
3. It has rear Deore Derailer’s and is 24 speed, 26inch with front disc Brakes.
Could this be a FAKE. Many Thanks, Peter.
copy. Montague did work with General Motors to produce Hummer branded bikes between 2002 and 2007. Since that time Montague has produced NO Hummer branded bicycles.
HUMMER = FAKE

I was just searching for a hummer bike yesterday online when I saw a store here in the philippines which sold “hummer” bikes in 2014…. After that I saw this and based on what i have read here there were no “hummer” bikes produced after 2007…. Does it mean that store sold fake “hummer” bikes?? You can check the fb page of that store… Please comfirm if i am correct. Thanks
https://m.facebook.com/jryanmcbikes/posts/783796811671182
That’s correct. We have produced no Hummer branded bikes after 2007. The bikes in the link you provided are not genuine Montague bikes.
I find this one just today at affordable price, in Italy…is this genuine?
Thank you for your reply.
sorry, forgot the link…

That does appear to be a genuine used Montague Hummer. It can be hard to tell from photos, but I don’t see anything there that makes me think it’s not!
Hi! I’ve seen Montague bikes sold on Amazon. See: http://www.amazon.com/Montague-Paratrooper-Mountain-Folding-Matte/dp/B000JI7ZBK
Do you sell thru Amazon? I would expect these are fakes, but I’m not sure?
We don’t sell through Amazon ourselves, but some of our retailers do. I don’t think I’ve seen any counterfeits on Amazon in the US, and all the sellers that currently show up as options on the listing you linked to are official retailers.
Please answer me, is this a fake?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6gfZjSB5MbSRGVsZDRXOUlkaUk/view?usp=docslist_api
It’s not made by Montague.
Thank you
Hi! Im purchasing a urban montague for next week. I already pay a downpayment. Id like to know the one in here in missauga canada is ligitimate store distributor. How do i know is genuine?
Beagle Bicycle Co. in Missauga is one of our official retailers. They only sell genuine Montague bikes.
Hi,
I’m from the philippines and would like to know if this is legit.. they say they are a distributor of the real stuff from you guys.. let me know coz im really looking to buy one
http://www.ironbike.net/news/bike/montague
Those photos do show genuine Montague Bikes. I’m not familiar with Iron Bike but as a retailer they’re likely supplied by one of our distributors in Asia.
Hi, I am from Singapore. Can I check if this website is the official retailer of your paratrooper pro?
https://www.cyclelogy.sg/products/montague-paratrooper-pro
They are indeed an official retailer.
Wow I had no idea that there is such a small difference.
Hi I want purchase Hummer bicycle
We stopped making Hummer branded bicycles in 2008. We’ve continued to improve our bike designs since then and now have a complete line of folding road and mountain bikes under the Montague name.
is this site selling fake http://www.electroboard.biz/rangerx.htm.
Selling both in Singapore and Malaysia
These are not Montague bikes. You can see the frame folds in a different way. There is a hinge right in the middle of the top tube which considerably weakens the frame. Our bikes rotate around the seat tube to create the most rigid folding bike frame on the market.
Hi, I made a question the other day, but it looks like it was deleted or i dont know. Do you manufacture the land rover mountain folding bikes as well? Or is that just a counterfeit of montague? Thank you.
We do not make any Land Rover branded bikes.
Hello.
I am buying a Mongoose Transport bike that looks really like a Montague. It is a rebranded Montague or just a copy? Mongoose is a respected brand so I doubt they would make a cheap fake of a Montague.
Many thanks.
We licensed our folding design to Mongoose in the mid 2000s, so if it’s from that era it is likely genuine.
I bought a Black Hummer bike at Sams Club about 10 years ago. Is there any way to tell if mine is a real montague bike?
It is most likely real. Some official Hummer bikes were sold through Sam’s Club. Additionally, most of the counterfeit bikes in the world are in Asia and the middle east. Very few if any make it to north America.
I also bought a Montague brand bright yellow Hummer folding bike from Sam’s in 2005 or 2006. Was that color made or is it a fake? I can send pictures if needed. Please let me know.
That should be an authentic Montague Hummer bike. We produced them until about 2008 when GM stopped making the Hummer vehicles. It wasn’t until after that time that some counterfeits started appearing, because the authentic version was no longer available.
Please advise if electric bikes are being made and imported into Uk in 2017. I’m interested in the 27 gear paratrooper. Saw one on top of a car in a showroom. Would like info about battery – Li ion?, voltage, Wh, range and motor – torque, wattage
We don’t produce any electric versions of Montague bikes ourselves but there are many dealers and individuals around the world that use electric conversion kits. Our UK distributor does create the Boston Ze for example that uses an electric assist hub on our Boston model. We are looking at an official electric Montague for the near future!
Hi Montague,
You guys should seriously consider selling frame sets alone. Most serious riders sometimes have enough parts to build another bike, or sometimes don’t want to pay too much for your complete bikes (which is overpriced – in most cases considering the low specs components). Trying to get hold of frame set are almost next to impossible. Yet at the same time you want us to stay away from the counterfeits..but do nothing to enhance your appeal and make your bikes accessible. I’ve tried your distributors in 3 countries and none of them even carry the X90 frame set? What gives? Why not give us the option of just buying the Paratrooper frame by itself and spec it ourselves..it’s counter-intuitive but the more people you get out there riding your frames the more brand awareness you get. Instead, what is happening now is that there’s a Hummer at every corner because you priced yourself out of range. Too bad…
Hi Montague
I’m looking to purchase a Hummer.
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-other-bike/laval-rive-nord/hummer-bicycle/1208766694?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
Is this one real? It looks ok, but can’t be sure.
Also what year does it look to be, if it’s an original.
Thx! in advance
It’s hard to say from that one photo, but I don’t see anything initially that makes me think it is counterfeit. It appears sufficiently old enough to be from the era when we actually produced Hummer bikes (mid 2000s) and the components seem to check out. Not a lot of the counterfeits make it to North America either.
hi
great that sounds good.
do you have a ballpark of what it might be worth?
from great/good to not so good a condition.
Also, any hints on what i should test, to make sure it’s working properly.
no experience, with folding bikes
thx!
Can you confirm whether “sports by sager inc” are selling genuine bikes via Amazon?
Sports by Sager is indeed an authorized Montague retailer.
I would like to know if Velomania Pty Ltd, 2/47 Applebee Street, St. Peters, Sydney, Australia, is a seller of genuine Montague bikes. I have put a deposit on a ‘Navigator’.
Velomania is our official distributor in Australia. You can find them listed on our site at https://www.montaguebikes.com/au.html
Looking into getting one of theses and I was just wanting to verify whether or not these would be counterfeit. The description seems legit, but I’m still unsure.
The images on the listing are of a genuine Montague, but the X50 is a model we no longer make and no longer have in stock. I’m not sure who the seller is either. We don’t sell through jet.com but one of our dealers could.
To anybody buying a fake or lookalike knowingly to save money . I have just purchased my first paratrooper in original. It is a top quality bike I love it so well made . From an online retailer I had to pre order /pay well worth the money . I purchased from winstanleys very good company to buy from my montague was well boxed and packed. Only regret wish id brought the pro
Is any dealers in India to get a real bike?
There is one company in India that sells our bikes. They are Happy Earth Enterprises: http://happyearth.in/
Is this real? http://www.ironbike.net/news/bike/montague/montagueparatrooperpro
It appears genuine. Iron Bike would be supplied by either our distributor in Malaysia or in Taiwan.
Hay, I have frame of montgue x50 bicycle , that i have been customized it with all new part of my old bicycles. So do you have its distributor in India??
Happy Earth Enterprises carries some of our bikes in India: https://www.montaguebikes.com/in.html
Hi Montague,
Where are your bikes manufactured? Are those with made in taiwan decals fake? Like this one: Mountain Bike from Montague Paratroopers for S$800 https://carousell.com/p/148980240 on #carousell
We do manufacture in Taiwan and that bike appears genuine. We produced that color of Paratrooper for the Taiwanese market only.
Was there ever a paratrooper with a marking 2nd Division and a patent pending sticker?
Separate question, an add said stainless steel montague bike, are there any?
There certainly would have been a patent pending sticker on our bikes when the X-series design was first released around 2000 or 2001. It takes quite a while for a US patent to be approved. One of our distributors did have 2nd Division decals on bikes made for the Taiwanese market at one point but I’m not positive it was ever used in North America.
Some early X-series bikes did have a steel rear frame but it would have been chromoly, not stainless.
Do you have any supplier of Montague paratrooper folding bike in india then please furnish his details
Happy Earth Enterprises LLP distributes Montague Bikes in India. You can find them at http://happyearth.in/
Montague Navigator Full Size Folding Mountain Bicycle 20.25 in Frame
https://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/bik/d/montague-navigator-full-size/6652411810.html
This is a fake, right? The dropout looks different and all other photos I’ve seen of this model have a slanted top bar and this one is perfectly horizontal.
That is a genuine Montague but one of our Bi-Frame models. That frame design is from the 1990’s and was used before our current design was developed. We used the Navigator name back then as well!
I just picked up what appears to be an authentic Montague Hummer. I paid 50 bucks for it at a garage sale!
Thanks to the info. on this site, I was able to authenticate its true identity. 🙂
Where can I get an original seat for my Hummer bike?
We don’t generally sell components separately as most parts on our bikes are industry standard and can be replaced with any off-the-shelf aftermarket options. Additionally, we stopped making the Hummer model in 2009 (around the same time GM stopped making the Hummer vehicles), and we do not have parts for bikes that old.
Any idea if this is a fake or not?
https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/spo/d/bethesda-genuine-montague-hummer/6838669885.html
The listing has mostly generic product photos. The final one might be the actual bike for sale? If so, it looks genuine but it’s hard to tell from the one low resolution photo.
Thanks for replying to my last comment! I have another one; fake or not?
(The sticker reads: “Montague USA Patent Pending,” so I figured maybe it’s an older model)

I have bougt it for 20 € in a sekond hand shop. Was this a good Deal and it is a original
Is this serial number valid?
Yellow Hummer
Montage Military Technology
MT50801190
I don’t have an exact match in our database. That would only happen if the original owner had registered the bike, but it does appear to be a possible serial number of a 2005 Montague Hummer.
Wondering if you have any ideas about the legitimacy of this Hummer?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Montague-Hummer-military-tech-folding-bike-project-incomplete/323917180110?hash=item4b6af7ecce:g:kqkAAOSwBSVdfyxY
From reading earlier comments, it seems there aren’t many counterfeits in the US, but better safe than sorry as I’m considering driving 14 hrs for this one…
Also, I haven’t been able to find much information about the Hummer since it is no longer in production. Is it essentially the same as Paratroopers from similar years, or are there and differences (especially of the frame) that I should be aware of?
Thanks!
It does appear to be one of our original Hummer bikes, although it’s difficult to tell what condition it’s in from those photos. You are correct that it is essentially our Paratrooper frame from that era, which was licensed to General Motors. It is of course a bit different from our current bikes, but all the components are industry standard so they can be replaced with aftermarket options.
If you have any thoughts on the legitimacy of this Hummer, they would be much appreciated:

Thanks!
How do I post a pic here?
You’ll have to provide a link to an image hosted elsewhere, or you can email us at info@montaguebikes.com.
Hi there, is this bike fake or OEM?
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/bik/d/sherman-oaks-hummer-h3-folding-bicycle/7128322693.html
Thank you!
This looks like a genuine Montague from the mid-2000s.
Any recommended shop for fold bike?
Hi, is this bike fake?
https://www.mibicicleta.pe/producto/hummer-plegable-aro-26%e2%80%b3-curvo/
Been waiting for Paratrooper Pro from your HK distributor FlyingBall. Was told there’s a possible shipment around Dec-20/Jan-21. They are not very helpful in clarifying the dates and even not very keen to take a deposit so I can secure an order
Flying Ball is likely reluctant to give an exact date for delivery because there is a fair amount of uncertainty in the global bicycle supply chain due to high demand and long lead times as a result of COVID. However, we are expecting bikes to be delivered to Flying Ball in January.
I’ve a Montague Boston 8 bike and I’m residing in Singapore, where can I get repair services for my bike?
Is this Boston 8 model still in production or has been replaced by a newer model?
All the components on that bike are industry standard, so any bike shop would be able to provide service, even if they’re not a Montague dealer. The Boston 8 has been discontinued, and was essentially replaced by the Allston as the internal gear hub bike in our product line.
Please let me know whether these guys are selling fake Montaque/Mongoose bikes. It seems fake but according to merchant these guys insists it is genuine.

This is not a Montague bike, but it does copy our older folding design, and is attempting to look like one of ours with the “Montbike” decal. We never use wheels smaller than 26″ and we never use the word “Montbike”. I can’t say for sure whether it’s a real Mongoose but given the maker’s attempt to copy our look, it’s doubtful.
Can i send photo of bike to confirm whether it is Original or Fake Bike?
You’re welcome to email us at info@montaguebikes.com
Im in Zambia Lusaka, where can I get one of your bike’s

I have an original victory red bike that we got when my husband purchase a hummer. It’s only been ridden around the block twice. It’s a 27 speed. How much would it be worth?
I recently purchased a used Montague and want to change seatposts. My seatpost is marked 28.6 mm for size but it’s really hard to tighten enough so that it doesn’t slip down.
Is 28.6mm a legitimate size seatpost for a Montague? A decal says it’s made in Taiwan.
Our current bikes use 30.0mm seat posts and older models (pre-2012) used 27.2mm. I’m surprised that a 28.6mm post is even close to fitting one of our bikes. It would likely be way too small for a current bike and probably wouldn’t even fit inside the older 27.2mm post frames. Feel free to send us some photos of the bike to bicycle@montaguebikes.com and perhaps we’ll have some insight after seeing what you have there.
Hello, why don’t you produce specialized protective covers for the frame?
There is a real lack of such a cover with the MOLLE system, which would allow to attach additional bags to the frame and at the same time protect the bike frame from damage.
I’ve purchased my second Montague Folding MTB and I’m glad that I done it. With that said my Montague Folding MTB has help me on speedy recovery with my second Knee Replacement. Any other bike that look like Montague Folding MTB is fake as and I wouldn’t waste my time and money on it. ThansK for making a great MTB.
