For more than 20 years Montague has been dedicated to making cycling more accessible by creating folding bikes that performed as well or better than a non-folding bike and could also be transported easily to give the rider maximum flexibility.
That drive has led to several innovations including our Folding Integrated Technology, the CLIX quick release system used on the wheel and frame of our folding bikes, the Vibration Reduction Curve on our line of pavement bikes, and the Power Angle which gives our folding bikes such a stiff and responsive ride.
One of the most popular innovations, which has been on Montague Bikes for several years, is the Octagon height adjustable steering system. Octagon lets the rider adjust the height of the bikes handlebars without tools using a quick release. This lets adjustments be made on the fly depending on the height of the person riding the bike or how aggressive a position the rider desires. For example, biking to work the rider may lower the handlebars for a more aggressive riding position but raise them on the way home for a more relaxed ride. Octagon also makes it easy for different height riders to ride the same bike.
Up until now, Octagon has only been available on a few of Montague’s pavement bikes. We are proud to announce that Octagon is now available as an aftermarket component that can be installed on any bike with the industry standard 1 1/8″ steel steerer tube and is available from your favorite independent bike shop.
For more information on Octagon visit OctagonCycles.com or give us a call at 800-736-5348.
The Octagon seems really nifty. Which stems are possible to use with it? Suppose I want a shorter/ longer stem than the one you supply, can I switch the stock stem for any other of my choice?
Hey Pär,
The aftermarket Octagon can use any stem that normally clamps on a 1 and 1/8″ threadless steerer tube. The clamp diameter on the top of the Octagon is the same as the steerer tube.
Ok, thanks for your reply, I will go and let install an Octagon on my bike as soon as I have the money for it!
Will this work on the standard Paratrooper?
I hope you weren’t holding your breath, Adam. : )
The answer was yes, Octagon is compatible with our Paratrooper. However, it is not recommended for intense off road riding, drops, etc,. Octagon is designed with road and comfort riding in mind. Sorry for the delay 😉
Would the Octagon stem work with the paratrooper express?
Unfortunately, no. The Paratrooper Express uses a quill style stem and a threaded headset. Octagon can only be installed on bikes with a threadless headset and stem.
However, quill stems have some built in adjustability (although it does require a tool). If you need the bars even higher, a taller quill stem could be purchased.
Is it possible to apply the Octagon system to my Paratrooper handlebars?
Octagon is compatible with the Paratrooper. However, it is not explicitly intended for mountain biking, so if you are doing aggressive off-road riding where there is additional forces on the steering column, we would recommend a standard steerer tube extender to raise the handlebars.
Is there a way to buy individual parts to the octagon system? I am missing the top cap, and managed to sheer off the pin that locks the handle bar in place
Unfortunately, no. Additionally, the pin/lever on the back of the Octagon that release the vertical section for adjustment is not replaceable on it’s own.
How much length of the steerer tube is required to mount this unit?
The Octagon requires exactly 18mm of steerer tube sticking up above the top most spacer for mounting. You can find more information at http://octagoncycles.com/how-to-install-octagon/
Hello, Does the Montague Allston 11 Speed Belt Drive Folding Bike come with Octagon height adjustable steering system preinstalled? Or do we need to buy separately?
Octagon is not included on the Allston, but it is compatible and could be installed. Given the nature of the installation, we recommend that you have this done by a professional bike mechanic.
Can the Octagon be installed on an Allston bike? thanks
Octagon is compatible with the Allston and could be installed. Given the nature of the installation, we recommend that you have this done by a professional bike mechanic.
Can this be used on a navigator?
The aftermarket version of the Octagon system would be compatible with the Navigator. It can be mounted on any bike that uses a 1 1/8″ threadless steel steerer tube.
Does the Navigator come with an Octagon steerer extender? There seems to be some confusion regarding this.
Hi Sam. No, the Navigator does not come with Octagon installed.
Is it possible to fit the Octagon to my Paratrooper Highline?
Octagon would be compatible with the Paratrooper Highline, but we’ve discontinued it due to issues with the component factory that was producing it. We are no longer able to get it, but we hope to introduce an Octagon version 2 in the future. You could still easily raise the handlebars with the addition of a standard stem riser or “steerer tube extender”.
When will an Octagon 2 be available?
Is this compatible with the Montague BiFrame, Make 2021810?
Where can I purchase this octagon raiser in Singapore? Can I order from Montague directly and let them ship to Singapore?
The Octagon has since been discontinued so unfortunately it is no longer being produced or sold. If you’d like to raise your handlebars, I’d recommend a standard steerer tube extender. They’re widely available from most bike shops and many sources online.
The fork with the Octagon stem became loose on my Montague Navigator. How do I adjust the stem in this case? There is no top screw to adjust it as with normal ahead stems. Just pushing the clamp down did not help.
Headset compression is achieved with downward pressure on the Octagon collar, then tightening the clamp bolts on that collar to keep it in place. Usually removing the front wheel and putting the fork on the floor will allow you to put enough pressure on it with just your body weight. Pulling the vertical section of the Octagon out of the collar can also make it easier (there’s a tab on the bottom that can be pushed in to allow it to slide all the way out).
A headset press can also be used by sliding it through the collar and out the bottom of the fork, or even a standard bar clamp.
