Two of our folding bike models, the Navigator and the Boston 8, feature quick release fenders on the front and rear. Fenders are an absolute necessity if you’re riding in foul weather, but even a wet road after the rain can leave you with soggy shoes and pants if you don’t have the proper protection. Our quick release fenders can now be purchased for use with any of our Pavement Bikes. Your FIT, Crosstown, or single speed Boston can now offer that same protection from rainwater and road grime.
For easy removal, these fenders clip onto brackets that mount using the brake caliper bolts. The installation procedure might not be obvious at first, but it’s fairly simple. If you purchase one of our aftermarket fender kits, it will include some extra hardware. The only pieces you will need are the fenders themselves, and these two brackets:
Start by removing the front brake caliper with a 5mm allen key:
Once the caliper is free, the front bracket (shown below) can be installed. It will pass under the fork crown, with the clip in the rear:
To secure it, pass the brake caliper bolt through the slot in the bracket, and thread the nut back on from the back:
Now you can slide the fender in the clip, and close the lever to lock it:
Installing the rear fender is a similar procedure, but the bracket is a bit different. Again, start by removing the brake caliper:
With the aftermarket fender kit, you’ll have an extra bracket (one more than you need). The correct one for the rear is the longer, narrow, two-prong bracket. The narrower bracket is designed to prevent any interference when folding the bike. The slotted section of the bracket goes between the brake and the frame, and the rest extends up and over the top of the brake caliper. Thread the nut back onto the brake caliper from the underside, and tighten it up:
The rear fender has the clip built in. Slide it onto the bracket, and close the lever. If either of your fenders seem off center from the wheel, you can correct that by loosening the brake caliper bolt, and rotating the bracket:
There you have it, protection from the elements, and easy, quick release removal:
HI! Where I can buy the right set of fenders? I see that is very hard to obtain the right one, expecially here in Europe.
Thanks!
Hey Flavio,
I would check first with your local Montague distributor to see if they have any in stock. While the fender itself isn’t specific to our bikes (it’s made by Sunnywheel), the bracket we use is. Although, other types of fenders can definitely be used on our bikes too. You just want something on the front that can be easily removed when folding. The Planet Bike Speed EZ fenders are pretty quick to get on and off.
I got Boston single speed. In rain my bum is always soggy! Is there any mudguards for this, I tried in shops but none, or alternative please
There are a handful of aftermarket fenders that would work, but you really want a design on the front that is easy to remove for folding. The SKS Raceblade Pro XL seems to be a popular choice for our pavement bikes. They offer nearly full coverage and simply “clip on” to the seatstays and fork for easy removal: https://www.google.com/shopping/product/1081926729645793315
Hi
Do you have full size fenders?
Do you have an engine for these bikes?
Peter
Hey Peter,
We don’t sell full coverage fenders ourselves, but aftermarket options can definitely be used on our bikes. You would need a front fender that comes off easily for folding, so the SKS Raceblades would work pretty well.
No engines available from us. Some of our dealers do electric conversions though. I’ve seen several with BionX motors on them.
The guards supplied are as photographed, but the fitting instructions bore no resemblance! only with the aid of this page did I realise I had fitted the rear bracket incorrectly, I had it in the normal guard bracket fashion under the calliper (It was inhibiting the bike folding properly), the Photograph of rear bracket fitment clearly shows it fitting over the calliper.
Perhaps the supplied fitting instructions should be updated to show the fitment of guards with brake calipers and all relevant brackets?
Hi John. Unfortunately the instructions supplied with the actual fenders are generic install instructions and not specific to our bikes. I didn’t realize they were so inaccurate though. We’ll look at supplying something better.
Can I order fenders and brackets for my Boston anywhere, or do I have to go through the dealer?
Hi Lucas. What year is your Boston? With some of the changes we made in 2016 the fenders you see in this picture no longer work on our bikes. They can still go on pavement models 2015 and earlier, and we do have a limited number of them left in our warehouse. Give us a call at 800-736-5348 if you’d like to discuss further or order a pair.
Wow just saw this and left a message at the number above. I can’t remember, but it’s probably like 2012 or 2013, so it sounds like the fenders you have will work (if you still have them).
I would love to order them as I use my Boston every day, rain or shine, and fenders would make things a lot nicer!
Hi,
Just wondering whether the Fender is suitable for the Montague Swissbike XO mountain bike that does not have mechanical brakes ?
Also, does the Paratrooper RackStand is suitable for the older product, i.e SwissBike XO?
I am living in Australia, would like to purchase the fender and RackStand
Please advise
Thanks
The fender in this blog post is our previous design which was only for use with pavement bikes. It wasn’t wide enough for mountain bike tires.
The aftermarket version of RackStand could go on the XO. We’ve never sold it separately before so it is launching in the US in June. Unfortunately, we don’t do any international shipping from our US warehouse. It will be up to our international distributors as to when (or if) they order it. Hopefully our Australian distributor will order some later this year.
Here in the US it will be available through the largest bike parts distributor in North America, QBP. They’re a wholesaler who will supply bike shops. They wouldn’t supply shops in Australia but once it’s available you might find a retailer here in the US who would ship to you.
Can you recommend a clip-on fender for a Montague pavement bike made after 2016? Thanks.
The SKS Raceblade Pro XL works quite well as a full coverage fender where the front is easily removable for folding.
Hi,
I’ve just bought a new Boston bike and am keen to complete the assembly asap, however there are two assembly related matters for which I need your advice:-
1. Do you supply suitable fenders, or can you recommend an appropriate supplier? I’ve read the previous discussions on this issue but it seems they relate to different models.
2. Your website at https://www.montaguebikes.com/product/boston/ states the Boston has an adjustable handlebar stem, being a Kalloy, Alloy Threadless, with 7 Degree Rise. After unpacking my new bike (bought from Amazon) I was dismayed to find it had no adjustable stem. What date did you first introduce the adjustable stem version of the Boston?
Thanks.
Hi Rod,
While there are probably quite a few fenders that could be installed, you will need a design where the front fender can be easily removed for folding. A standard full-coverage fender that was bolted on would stick out from the side of the folded bike. I usually recommend the SKS Raceblade fenders which offer excellent protection and come off quite easily:

We’ve never used an adjustable stem on the Boston. Where did you see on our website that it is adjustable? If you wanted to add one, you could certainly use a standard angle adjust stem or even add the Octagon system.
I have two navigators, about 4 years old but basically unused (bought for boat but boating has been delayed due to medical situation). I can not locate the front fenders and need to replace them with new clip ons. Your web site says that the Planet Bike Speed EZ fenders come with a dedicated clip. I was snot able to see this on the Planet Bike Speed web site. Also the SKS appeared to have more lateral supports. Is it also “clip on”? Each bike still has the front bracket but the fenders, screws, and hardware are missing. What do you recommend as the simplest and best front fenders for the Navigator?
Thanks
Art
We no longer have the fenders shown in the post available, as we stopped using them on our bikes back in 2015. The other options suggested, like the Planet Bike SpeedEz and the SKS Raceblades, are viable options because they can be easily removed. You need a front fender that can be removed and put back on when folding, and those both use a design that simply straps onto the fork or frame, and can come off without any tools.
What Clip on mudguard would fit Montague Fit 2012 please
SKS Raceblade fenders should work on that bike. They make a few different widths of that fender, so take a look at the tire width the fenders are meant for before purchasing.
