The 28th edition of Eurobike, the world’s largest bicycle trade show, took place last week in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Montague Bikes joined manufacturers from all over the world to exhibit their latest products to international distributors, product managers, and cycle press. After four days of talks, presentations, and consuming a truly impressive number of German pretzels, the Montague team is back in the US and serving up a sneak preview of the new Montague M-E1, a foldable, step-through mid-drive electric bike.
M-E1
The Montague M-E1, slated for release in 2020, is the world’s first full-size performance foldable e-bike. A revolutionary new e-bike designed for the urban rider, the M-E1 is equipped with Shimano Steps E6100 and a Deore drive train, and folds in seconds with a single quick release.
The M-E1 offers the same ride quality as a non-folding mid-drive e-bike, but can be stored in the closet, train, or car trunk, keeping it safe from theft and out of the elements.
Stay tuned for specifications and more details soon!
Hello,
I was wondering whether there were any reasons for the lack of stock availability, particularly when attempting to order from Europe. Might thtere have been a press release or similar advising of production issues or is it simply a matter of HQ being inundated with new orders?
Many thanks in advance
Our international distributors control their own ordering, and unfortunately some of our European distributors sold out of bikes much faster than they expected. Without inventory pre-ordered to accommodate for standard bicycle production lead times, certain models have been out of stock there for some time. We apologize for the inconvenience and we hope to improve this going forward.
This looks like a winner!
Kudos to David and his design team.
We will definitely offer these.
This looks quite similar to the RadPower folding e-bike. What makes your bike superior? I am planning on buying a folding e-bike in the coming months. Thank you!
The Rad Power bike has smaller wheels and a smaller frame, and most significantly, a hub motor. The Montague bike will be full-sized frame and components with full-sized wheels. And it will have a mid drive motor, which is much more efficient and more natural to pedal assist than a hub motor.
Is it possible that this bike could be done with a gates carbon belt and internal gearing in the rear hub?
We’re not set up to make customizations like this to individual bikes, so it wouldn’t be possible to supply one with that specification. Additionally, if a belt drive is used on a bike, the frame should be designed with some method for tensioning the belt. In the case of a mid-drive motor, an eccentric bottom bracket cannot be used so it would likely need to be a sliding dropout, which this frame does not have.
It’s possible you might be able to accomplish this with an aftermarket gear hub and a pulley style tensioner, but we have not tested that set up.
Please design a full size folding E-Bike with a internal hub and Gates belt drive. No one makes one! Been looking for years.
Your 28-inch wheel sized folding e-bike appears to fit the bill for beefy Park & Ride.
What is the driving range of the Montague e-bike?
That is a decisive criterion in deciding to purchase the new Montague e-bike.
When will it be on sale in Germany?
This setup of the Shimano E6100 series motor and a 418 kWh battery should provide a range of at least 80 km of assisted riding on a single charge. This always varies based on riding conditions such as terrain, hills, riding style, etc., but that should be a conservative estimate! We expect our German distributor to order some soon for delivery in the spring of 2020. I recommend contacting them directly to encourage them to bring some in immediately! https://www.montaguebikes.com/de/
This bike looks great. Would you consider offering it with the 2020 Brose Drive System and something around 500-630 watt hours battery? I need a mid drive ebike which does not drag or offer resistance when the motor is turned off.
The M-E1 will only be available with a Shimano Steps drive system. Brose would require a different mounting bracket to be integrated with the frame, and we’re not set up to customize individual bikes in this way. But we appreciate the feedback! Perhaps a future version will use Brose.
Thank you for the reply. I think that Montague will be entirely unique in having a high-quality, mid drive full size folding ebike on the market. That is a wonderful thing.
Could you please answer one question if you know it. Does the Shimano motor produce some drag while pedaling it without electric power, like the older Bosch mid drive units, or does it allow you to pedal freely without resistance like the Brose motors?
I currently own four Montague Swiss bikes which I bought from Phew in Philadelphia and had “electrified” by adding Bafang 750 motors with both pedal assist and throttle. I keep them on my sailing catamaran and have used them as we have sailed about a quarter of the globe. I just bought your new Alston belt drive which we will also motorize. I also own, and keep on the boat, the Optibike R15 which is now nine years old, but the most powerful bike I have ever ridden….however, as I get older it gets harder and harder to step over the frame to mount this very heavy bike. Thus I am very excited about your new step-thru model, but I am relatively sure it will not be powerful enough for my uses in very hilly and rugged terrain. I have been told repeatedly that you won’t customize, so could I buy just the step-thru bike without the motor, etc. and then we would attempt to adapt it with a Rohloff 14 speed internal hub and a Bafang 1000 watt motor, with the appropriate battery? Obviously this would add considerable cost to your basic bike, but I think we could have a revolutionary bike suitable to many situations and riders! If possible I would love to speak with Mr. Montague about this. And, if you guys would build this bike for me I would buy four from you now!
Would buy if offered in a belt drive version. Derailleurs need to much maintenance! Get damaged to easy. Old technology! Go with a drive system like on your Allston and you have a winner!!! Folding, belt drive, full size E bikes are the future!
Cannot wait to have this fine e-bike in my store in NorCal!
